Edge of Cedars State Park, Blanding, Utah

July 29, 2020

When mom and dad were talking to the young park rangers at Hovenweep, they told us about this park's visitor's center and museum. It turns it out it has been the repository for much of the Anasazi finds in the Four Corners area.

Mom and dad really liked the small sculpture garden with sculptural images inspired by the Anasazi petroglyphs...

Vegetable Smoke Man

Ant Man on a Kiva Ladder

Dad was the only one brave enough to go into the Kiva. I would have, but I didn't know how to use those kind of stairs...

As we understand the inside Kiva dynamics, there would have been a large, flat stone to deflect the smoke from the fire instead of these sticks...

You could sit on the ledge-like benches around the walls

Here is another view inside...

Mom was trying to keep me from joining dad because I was really worried about him...

Dad did a great job photographing the remaining support beams inside...

We read that per tribal requests, they had left the site only partially uncovered...here you can see some of the remaining beams...

One of the many walls that I investigated until mom told me to get off them...I can't read the signs...

I loved this Sun Marker as much as mom; although at one point I got my leash caught during my exploration and mom had to rescue me.

M & D were so thrilled to have the place to themselves except for one person at the front desk...
They got to watch the movie about the Four Corner's Pueblos in peace...They told me about it, and the fabulous murals and artwork they found inside...

Mom really was fascinated and delighted by all the copied petroglyphs, that are now underwater...She was so thrilled they had saved their images; at least in this way...

A very cool and unusual way to depict a timeline for this area...

One of mom's favorite artwork from here because it really gives you an idea of how colorful their art was...and just how widely they traveled and traded...

She just couldn't believe how ancient some of these pieces were...and in what good shape!!!

There was no big surprise for me when I saw mom showing Elise how to make an Anasazi style pinch pot inspired by these wonderful creations...Even if, she can't really use her like these were used...

M & D loved the overall and decorative designs of this pottery

Mom didn't know that basketmaking predated pottery until this museum's displays and signage...

It had even more ancient artwork and pottery than the Heard Museum in Phoenix and the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. We had never seen the Anasazi mugs...Mom would have loved to have any of them!!!

There was so much to learn here that I was exhausted afterwards; but I revived, when mom found a fantastic local diner on Yelp!
She shared her burger with me...so much deliciousness... that we had to save half of it all for dinner later!!!

By doing all these day trips we were able to see more and more of the cute little town close to our RV park, Cortez, CO...
We were able to enjoy three very different takeout meals from three entirely unique restaurants...
It makes my mouth water just thinking about them... The Wigglin Pig, La Casita De Cortez and The Farm Bistro, we will miss you...
