On the Road Again
We all were beyond sad to leave our sisters/daughters behind…
It was an easy, non eventful ride Sundermeier RV right off the highway in St Charles, MO…This campground isn’t very fun…lots of concrete with a bit of grass in between, but it works for an overnight stop. So grateful, M & D didn’t choose it for longer than this, even if it is clean.
Mom and I are struggling with the time change; so we were up at 5:55, but our bodies were telling us it was much later! Good News! We saw some spectacular skies; as the sun was coming up. Since no one was up, mom let me chase rabbits and squirrels off the property…Fun!!! One of my favorite pastimes!
This sky made mom think of this Cat Steven's song:
Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
It wasn’t his best work, but it was quite interesting, if a bit too predictable.
Mom loves James Taylor, so we listened to his short autobiography, Break Shot next...fascinating beginnings for
him..
As far as I’m concerned, they both were great for sleeping; especially if I could lay on my fur pillow on mom’s lap. Heaven!!!
Oh, the things you see as you travel this country...
We are more used to seeing helicopters flying low over our marina spraying for mosquitoes or releasing dragonflies...
I was so excited when we arrived at the Four Seasons RV Campground in Abilene, KS. Grass, and woods all around with a rather green, but serene looking fishing pond. There doesn’t seem to be many dogs or people around; so mom let me run the fields. There were so many butterflies, rabbits and birds to chase. I was delirious!
For a change it was a cool morning, so mom took me for a long walk around the grounds, letting me run free while no one was about. I got so excited!!! I didn’t even want to come into eat. A rarity!
Spending most of today driving across Kansas, it’s especially green and gold this summer...spectacular fields stretching on forever.
Some have massive hay rolls, some a variety of cows and some a few oil drills. Love the bucolic looking small towns that you see out here...
We thought we would make a quick stop at Fort Hays Historic Site. Shucks! Like the Eisenhower Presidential Library, it was closed too...
We passed by Fort Riley, home of the Big Red One...Of course, dad knew what the nickname meant!
Yesterday, We started listening to John Grisham’s, The Guardians. As usual, it’s an interesting listen since it’s about innocent prisoners imprisoned for life or given death sentences on flimsy evidence. We are guessing it's based on the Innocent's Project. There are different versions in the various states...Mike brought some of innocents into speak at different Judicial Conferences. Fascinating and terrifying at the same time!
Turns out this town has had a post office since 1888 and maybe contains around 250 people, median family income around $32,000...
After we set up a terrific storm came through with high winds and thunder...YIKES! Then, the noise became excruciating for me when pebble size HAIL started hitting us...we were very glad when it passed!!! The temperatures dropped too, so M & D took me for a walk and to play ball after dinner...
Dad didn't realize how beautiful the sky was behind mom until I showed him this photo...
Mom said that "You are never too old to swing" but I was very confused why she was off the ground???
We move on this morning to Mosca, CO besides the Great Sand Dunes National Park. We will spend a couple of nights there before moving onto Mesa Verde for a week...I can't wait because they told me how much there will be to see and do outdoors there!
Happy Trails to US...until we meet again! (I have no idea why mom told me to add that last line, something about her childhood???)

Pippi, you are a wonderful story-teller. (A non- fiction storyteller!) Glad you are seeing our beautiful country with your Mom & Dad. Stay safe, and... happy trails!
